PROGRAM:
Today's Club Assembly was opened by DICK RAHDERT (Left), by explaining that we
have new directors, new and ongoing projects.
He introduced DAN HEMAN
(Right) who updated the club on Membership. There are new Membership packets
(produced by the Membership Recruitment committee) to make proposing a new
member as easy as possible. At the end of August we had 213 members (your
editor notes that 6 more have been introduced in September). Other facets of
the Membership Area of Service include Family of Rotary, chaired by LETA
KELLEY and PAT COREY. This committee arranges small functions and tours
to promote bonding and networking.

SUSAN SMITH reported on Service Projects. Since our largest and signature
project, Back Packs at Miami Elementary School, will be the topic of next week's
program, SUSAN focused on the other projects. Rotoract, the college club, has
DAVID BRIDGES as its faculty advisor and Dave MdGaw as Co-Chair. Two
Year College Guests committee is facilitated by PAT COREY and TIM
PARSONS. The Two Year College Scholarship committee is chaired by ROB
NOLL. This committee selects four students for $1,000 scholarships. High
School Student Guests committee is Co-Chaired by FRED KUIPERS and LIZ
SOLBERG. High School Scholarships committee is chaired by MIKE SIMPSON.
Five $1,000 scholarships are awarded to area high school seniors each spring.
BRYAN METZGER is chairing the Salvation Army Bell Ringing project,
scheduled for December 12th. The Youth Campership Committee, chaired by
GEORGE and NERLENE RAMSEY, awards about $4,000 to organizations for
various summer camps. Shots Not Spots, chaired by FRITZ COHEN; Red Cross
Holiday Gifts, chaired by CYNTHIA HARDING; Women's Shelter Christmas
Boxes, chaired by BETTY DOVERSBERGER; and Missing and Exploited
Children committee, chaired by BOB HANNEMANN round out our many service

TIM LUZADER, reporting on the Club Administration area, noted that he has
learned the "behind the scenes" activity that it takes to make our meetings run
smoothly. Our Program chair is DICK RAHDERT. JEANNE NORBERG chairs
the Communications committee. The Operations Committee is chaired by JO
WADE. The Music Committee, chaired by RAY PEETERS and ARVID OLSON;
the House Committee (money takers), chaired by GUS GUSTAFSON; the
Greeters Committee, chaired by STEVE PENNELL; and the Invocations
Committee, chaired by JIM HOBBS, all play important parts each Tuesday.

For the International Area, JIM TURLEY, chair of the International Foundation
Committee, said this committee wants to keep the club updated on the activities
of The Rotary Foundation, increase the number of Paul Harris Fellowships, and
make us aware of the importance of Every Rotarian Every Year contributions.

SONYA MARGERUM, International Projects Committee chair, reported that a
$2,000 matching grant to help purchase laundry equipment for an orphanage in
Mexico ha s been approved. A second $2,000 matching grant for microscopes
for the University of Liberia (where the president of the University is a Rotarian) is
in process.

JACK KELLEY, chair of the Group Study Exchange Committee, reminded us that
next April a group from The Netherlands need host families. He also reported on
a major project held over from last year. The Burn Unit in El Salvador will be the
only center in Central America where children who receive major burns can be
effectively treated. The building is nearly finished and the cost of equipping it has
been reduced. JACK is working with the District to fund the equipment cost at
$150,000.

ELSA JANLE Co-Chairs the Ambassadorial Scholars committee with TERRY
WEST. There are inbound and outbound scholars. Our club has a successful
track record of nominated students accepted by the District for the $20,000 grant.
We also host inbound students who are studying at Purdue. Our current student
is from South Korea.
DICK RAHDERT ended the program by previewing upcoming programs for the
year.

Last week TERRY WEST shared with us some of the highlights of his life and
career. Born in St. Louis, he spent time at the YMCA playing basketball and
swimming. Along the way he developed an interest in geological engineering,
which brought him to Purdue as a graduate instructor. His passion for teaching
and mentoring local and international students gave him the opportunity to help
80 graduate students, 18 of them receiving Ph.D's. He was introduced to Rotary
by Ken McCullen in 1977 and has taken a special interest in Rotary
Ambassadorial Scholars, chairing that committee for many years. TERRY and
his wife, Shirley, have a grown daughter and son and two grandchildren.
