VICE PRESIDENT DICK RAHDERT asked us to keep the following in our thoughts and prayers: BOB BROCK, ROY WHISTLER, and former Rotarian Bill Pape, and the family of ROB GALBRAITH whose father passed away in Florida last week. |
GORDON KINGMA introduced Jerri Faris (daughter of the late Bill Long) who is
completing a PhD in Communications at Purdue and is Chaplain at the
Tippecanoe County Jail. She spoke to us on the topic, "An Innovative Prisoner
Outreach Program". Her emphasis was on the Re-entry Court. When
prisoners are sent home with $75 and a bus ticket, there is a 68% arrest rate
after 3 years. She described the history of the Court, the process the prisoner
must go through to learn how to live a productive life and the group of people
who monitor that process. This program helps the person and saves the
community big dollars in the end. Success is measured in fewer returns to prison
(it costs $62 per day to keep a prisoner.)
